CrossFit 906 open in Ishpeming

An exercise trend that's increasingly popular with people of all ages and fitness levels has finally reached the central U.P.

CrossFit 906 opened in November in Ishpeming, at 200 E. Hematite Drive in the Bell Forest Products building.

Trainers Jill and Shay Korpi already plan to move to a larger location, still in Ishpeming, in the spring. The move is necessary, considering the new gym already has 60 members.

CrossFit is an exercise program focusing on core strength and overall muscle conditioning, used by professional athletes as well as physical therapists for its flexibility and adaptability to any fitness level, age, or experience level.

"We have weekly group classes; times vary, but usually three classes a day during the week and one each day of the weekend," says Jill Korpi. "Members can access the gym 24/7 as well, but classes or training sessions are only held at posted times."

Jill and Shay Korpi are both certified CrossFit trainers since May of 2010, and have been using CrossFit for two and a half and two years, respectively.

CrossFit is sometimes described as a mix of weightlifting, cardio exercise, and gymnastics, because of its variety and focus on improving personal benchmarks in strength, endurance and flexibility.
