Lake Superior State University will be the recipient of a $1.86M grant through the U.S. Department of Education's Strengthening Institutions Program that will be used to enhance faculty teaching and strengthen student advising.
Of the 39 grants issued across the country, LSSU is the only recipient in Michigan. They'll be using the funds, according to university president Tony McLain, to establish a faculty center for teaching and learning that will include resources to help enhance faculty instruction and advising.
"This grant is wonderful news not just for LSSU, but for our region, as it is geared to especially help students who may be the first in their families to attend college," says McLain. "Many of our students fit that description and this program will help them succeed."
In addition to the facility, the university will be allowed to use the funds for a wide variety of purposes, including planning, development of faculty and the development and improvement of academic programs, among other purposes.
