Delta County gets brownfield grant to develop three businesses

Delta County will be getting $450,000 as a loan from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to clean up and redevelop an industrial site in Escanaba.

The loan comes from the Brownfield Redevelopment Program and will rehouse three local businesses in a new building, where there currently is only vacant property.

The vacant land was formerly used for industrial purposes and contains contaminated fill material, ash and construction debris. The loan funds will go toward an environmental assessment, then the removal and disposal of materials from the site, allowing it to be reused.

The developer, Fleet Maintenance, LLC, will then come in and build a new building, about 17,500 square feet, which will house three local businesses, which plan to both consolidate and expand together. They are Harris Repair and Fabrication, T&C Tire, and the Great Dane Trailer parts and service center.

All together, the project should create 14 full-time jobs and about $1.5 million in private investment, along with increasing the local tax base.
