Two Upper Peninsula historic sites added to national register

Among the latest seven Michigan historic sites to be added to the National Register of Historic Places are two in the Upper Peninsula.

Saint Henry's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Cemetery is located in Nisula in Houghton County's Laird Township, and will now be on the historic register.

In Marquette County, the Park Hotel and Cabins in Republic also was added to the list. Built in 1943-46, the property is on 15 acres and consists of a two-story log hotel, stone cabins and outbuildings, and a never-finished home.

"These historic structures are irreplaceable and we hope this recognition will assist in their preservation," says State Historic Preservation Officer Brian Conway.

The other sites are Eastern Avenue School and Lexington School in Grand Rapids; Fremont High School in Fremont; Lower Trout Lake Bathhouse Complex and Contact Station near Auburn Hills; and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
