QTEK, LLC of Houghton wins business plan competition award

A new start-up company in Chassell has developed an antimicrobial technology, and won a statewide business plan competition award along the way.

QTEK, LLC was founded by Bowen Li and Amy Zhi, who won the New Business Idea award from the Great Lakes Entrepreneur's Quest competition this summer, from among 300 entrepreneurs who entered the competition. QTEK won $1,000 with the award.

Supported by Michigan Technological University and MTEC Smart Zone, QTEK created an antimicrobial additive for plastics and other raw materials and successfully wrote a business plan to monetize the product.

QTEK's new technology can be used to create self-cleaning surfaces that restrict bacterial growth, which has potential in the global plastics and coatings industries. They currently are working with customers to develop that potential.
